7:30pm: RBDA Meeting
Bonny Doon School Multi-Purpose Room
Understand the CDFA Plan for Aerial Spraying of Pesticides in Bonny Doon 2008
In the Fall of 2007 the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) began a program of aerial
spraying of pesticides to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties of which
Bonny Doon was exempt.
The CDFA eradication program of aerial spraying pesticides repeatedly at least three times (up to nine times)
a year for a minimum of 3-4 years is coming to Bonny Doon as soon as June 2008. Come to a RBDA meeting
to get informed and understand the complexity of this issue.

Saturday, March 22
11:00 am Ecological Reserve Volunteer Day
Meet by the old Firehouse on Martin Road
We will be continuing the fence repair. Please bring gloves, food, and water. Just three
hours or so of your time can make a difference.
Spring Nature Walks. Val Haley will lead three walks that focus on the rare plants, ecology, and
geology of the Reserve. The Saturday walks will be held April 19, May 3, and May 17. Sign
up early, as there is a maximum of 15 people per walk. To reserve your spot, call Val at 425-
0687, or send an email to
vegnet@cruzio.com.
We will meet at 11:00 am at the parking lot next to the old firehouse on Martin Road. Bring hiking
shoes, water and a lunch. The walks usually last about 2.5 hours.
Nature Note. French Broom (Genista monspessulana) is an invasive, non-native shrub. French
broom is starting to bloom now with sprays of yellow flowers, so it is easy to see. Spring is a great
time to remove broom plants, while the soil is wet and the plants are easy to pull by hand, and before they
seed.
If you would like to learn more about the Reserve or volunteer in any way, call Val at 425-1587.
