About Robert W. Piwarzyk
Robert W. Piwarzyk was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on October 21, 1937, and although always
interested in history, went on to graduate as a Mechanical Engineer from the University of Massachusetts,
Class of '59. After three years in Marine Corps Aviation, he came to California to be a Flight
Test Engineer with the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach. His first trip north in 1963 was all it
took for him to realize that the Santa Cruz Mountains were more to his liking.
Bob settled in Bonny Doon in 1975 across the road from a limekiln; and has had Lyme Disease ever since.
He has been an active State Park Docent since 1988, interpreting and teaching natural history, redwood
ecology, logging and lime industry history. A life member of the Mountain Parks Foundation, he authored
their fist two publications, Animals of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Valley of Redwoods.
Bob was employed as a Park Naturalist in Mendocino and was a Docent there in five state parks. He has
been active in many projects for California State Parks; the most recent being the new Visitor Center at
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. He is author of books and articles about the limekilns and firebricks
found in the Santa Cruz Mountain and Big Sur, and is founder of an informal group, "Lime Light", that
actively promotes teaching the history of the lime industry.
Bob has been involved with many of the local parks and historical societies, is a charter member of
Researchers Anonymous, and participated in the MAH exhibit, Coastal Voices: A Hundred Years of Davenport
History. Recently he co-authored Davenport Cement Centennial: Honoring Our Past, Building the
Future.
