Since during his CDF years Andy fought many wildfires, he has taken particular care to keep our place fire
safe. When the Martin fire broke out he had a pretty good sense of what was happening. We did not evacuate,
although I did load the car so we could be ready to leave on a moment's notice.
We stayed in close touch with 3 other immediate neighbors who also did not evacuate. Wednesday night Andy lay
in the hot tub and watched the helicopters and borate bombers fly over. Thursday night he was cutting a
little more brush while the rest of us sat in our dining room drinking wine - a bonding experience! It helped
that on Wednesday winds blew the smoke the opposite direction, and the trees mostly hid the smoke plume, so
except the for the eerie quiet and the planes and helicopters all seemed pretty normal. (Like all Bonny
Dooners, we are used to being without power, so that didn't seem weird.)
It did not help a lot to have to sign the liability release which the Sheriff's department brought around to
those of us they found still in our homes after the mandatory evacuation order. It especially did not help
to hear our neighbor from across Ice Cream Grade, who lives right under the Moonrocks and who was second to
call in the fire to 911, tell us that when he was given this form, the sheriff's deputy told him that the
reason they needed the form, which included names and addresses of next of kin, was so that they would know
how to find our dental records after we were incinerated and teeth and bone were all that was left!
