Stories of the Bonny Doon Fire, June 11-14, 2008

Anita Elfving writing on 6/16/2008

We got a whiff of the fire at the Bonny Doon Lavender Farm @ 2:50 and Diane Meehan confirmed what we suspected as the sky turned black and the sun orange: the fire was heading from Moonrocks and those home toward the Jessens and the Meehans property via the Ecological Reserve. One can only ponder what the damage would have been had there not been the clearing of the Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve in the past couple of years.

I left Gary & Diane to fight their fire after Ronnie told me that it was heading for Pineridge as he looked out from Reed & Lisa Flocks home - driving to work every day takes almost 15 minutes but the blaze and the Moonrocks were right there ablaze. I drove through the fire on Martin Road toward Ice Cream Grade, the huge plume of smoke rising like a huge bomb. We evacuated and stayed at Dooner Sandy & Greg's home near West Cliff Drive... It was horrible waiting, seeing Gary & Diane at the Bonny Doon Farm fighting the blaze... Now that we are back home it is eerily normal here in Pineridge and at the Bonny Doon Farm - except that the drive to and from work reminds me and will always remind me of what we survived.

I have never been more proud to the a resident of the community and never more grateful that I am to the firefighters and the kindnesses extended from family, friends and strangers.

I talked to CDF today at the Farm. Here is the video of Gary Meehan of the Bonny Doon Lavender Farm saving his home and business with his wife Diane. Some of our neighbor Mary and David Jessen...

CDF said that if it had been the night before, it would have charged all the way across Bonny Doon to the coast!

Bonny Doon Farm is back in business, has a cyberspace phone answering and Nancy Goldie is shipping. I'm running back and forth from home where I have phone service.

I could not believe the wonderful fire fighters... Thanks, Tony, and all...
Thanks, Mike Bargetto, Cal Fire - and all the heroes.
